The artisan gold rush in Peru, social and environmental danger

Keywords: artisanal mining, informality, illegality, mercury, cyanide

Abstract

Mining in Peru plays a crucial role in the national economy. The increase in the export of metals such as gold and silver has driven economic growth and fostered the development of artisanal gold mining, which exhibits high levels of informality and illegality. This activity primarily focuses on the use of mercury and cyanide, leading to a significant impact on human health and the environment. In this context, the main objective of this study is to provide detailed information on the effects and issues associated with this industry, highlighting the insufficient governmental supervision as a relevant aspect. To conduct this analysis, sources were gathered from non-governmental organizations and interest groups dedicated to mitigating these risks. These stakeholders are actively involved in implementing safety measures, training in proper mining practices, promoting safer and sustainable technologies, and raising awareness about the risks associated with exposure to toxic chemicals in artisanal gold mining.
