Micro Certifications and Higher Education

Keywords: micro-credentials, digital badges, micro-certifications, higher education, employability, labor market

Abstract

Microcertifications have emerged as an alternative to contribute to closing the gap between the skills required and available in the labor market. Many organizations are giving greater importance in selection processes to microcertifications rather than official titles. To date, the incorporation of microcertifications in higher education (HE) is in the early stages, and although the offer has increased, its full potential has not yet been deployed. The purpose of this document is, based on a literature review, to identify the advantages and limitations of microcertifications, and to understand the role, conditions and challenges that HE must consider in the offer. The results show that the offer of microcertifications in HE is not a trend but a necessity, which requires compliance with academic and administrative conditions, as well as overcoming challenges such as the establishment of transparent criteria and methods for assement competencies.
